Zafarraya — over the Boquete into the mountains
The big Axarquía classic. A long, steady climb over the Boquete de Zafarraya (917 m) onto the high plateau, where the road passes through a rock gateway on the provincial border with Granada. It's not about gradient but about distance and rhythm — a long day you need to pace. Up top it's another world: a windswept plateau, small fields, a different light. Then a long descent back to the sea and the return along the coast. A day that leaves you knowing you've really ridden Andalusia.
Who it suits
A strong rider for a big day. A pro classic with a long but manageable climb to the Boquete.

Wind, season and kit
Wind: Watch out for the terral — a föhn-type northerly wind from the sierra, extremely hot and dry. It hits Málaga and the Guadalhorce valley, but often doesn't reach Rincón (10 km east). Terral in the forecast = ride east, or go high and early.
When to set off: Early morning — it's a long day (146 km) and you want to be on the Boquete before midday.
Season: Best in March–May and September–November. In September the share of muggy days drops from 43% (1 Sept) to 16% (30 Sept) — the end of the month is noticeably more pleasant. Summer is too hot for the inland climbs.
Gearing: At least 34×30; a long steady climb, not a steep one.
Tyres: 28 mm.
Watch out for
- ⚠DON'T take the Alfarnate variant — it has unpaved sections.
- ⚠The Zafarraya plateau is exposed and windy.
- ⚠A long day — keep an eye on water and time.
