Where to stay when you're here to ride
We'll recommend where to stay — to suit how you ride, and so that we all stay close together. You then book it yourself. This is how we think about locations: what actually matters to a cyclist — how quickly you get from bed to a good road, how much route variety you have from the door without a car, and how long the transfer from the airport (AGP) is. Our routes start from our base (100dola Malaga BASE) in Málaga, 10 minutes from the airport.
We don't list room prices (properties don't publish them) — only a price level from € to €€€€.
Best choice
Best all-round — you're straight into the hills above the city, close to the sea and on the way to the Axarquía.
- To a good road
- 5–10 min
- Climbs from the door
- Olías (13.8% wall), Puerto del León, Santopitar
- From the airport (AGP)
- 20–25 min
Best if you want the city as well as the riding — restaurants, cafés, atmosphere. Getting out of town takes longer, but then you're in the hills.
- To a good road
- 15–25 min
- Climbs from the door
- Puerto del León via Cristo de la Epidemia
- From the airport (AGP)
- 12 min by C-1 train
The best pure cycling base near the coast — climbing from the door, quiet, close to the airport.
- To a good road
- 0–5 min
- Climbs from the door
- MA-3300 'Carretera de la Vía', Sierra de Mijas
- From the airport (AGP)
- 10–30 min
The best roads for your money, but no sea. A historic town, clean tarmac, mountains right outside the door.
- To a good road
- 0 min
- Climbs from the door
- El Torcal (1,224 m), La Joya, El Chorro
- From the airport (AGP)
- 60 min by car / 30 min by train
Good choice
Good value for money and excellent train connections.
- To a good road
- 10–15 min
- Climbs from the door
- Sierra de Mijas via the A-368
- From the airport (AGP)
- 10–15 min by train
Climbing straight away, but the coastal corridor is at its worst here — head inland.
- To a good road
- 10 min inland
- Climbs from the door
- Mijas repeater (repetidor), Coín, Alhaurín
- From the airport (AGP)
- 34 min by train
Underrated — east of Maro the N-340 is almost empty thanks to the motorway. The prettiest white villages are just around the corner.
- To a good road
- 5 min
- Climbs from the door
- Frigiliana, Cómpeta, the Maro cliffs
- From the airport (AGP)
- 55–70 min
The most variety for a week, but the most expensive and no train to fall back on.
- To a good road
- 10 min
- Climbs from the door
- Istán, Ojén, Juanar
- From the airport (AGP)
- 45 min, no train
A strong climbing base for the Axarquía, but it gets the full force of the terral (a hot, dry northerly wind).
- To a good road
- 5 min
- Climbs from the door
- Zafarraya, Puerto del Sol, Comares
- From the airport (AGP)
- 45 min
The best scenery, the worst airport transfer. Better for a longer stay focused on the mountains.
- To a good road
- 0 min
- Climbs from the door
- Puerto del Viento, Grazalema, Genal
- From the airport (AGP)
- 90+ min
Not recommended
Not recommended — the airport cuts off the coast, so you have to detour via Campanillas and ride a stretch of dual carriageway. Close to AGP, but poor for riding.
- To a good road
- 25–35 min + MA-21
- Climbs from the door
- nothing directly
- From the airport (AGP)
- 10 min
