White villages — Frigiliana and Cómpeta
The east of the province is an underrated gem. This long loop links the prettiest white villages — Frigiliana clinging to its hillside and Cómpeta up in the mountains — and uses the N-340 beyond Maro, which is almost empty thanks to the parallel A-7 motorway. Car-free stretches, views of the sea and the Sierra Almijara, and coffee in the narrow white streets of Frigiliana. It's more about distance and atmosphere than metres climbed; an ideal long, relaxed day when you want to see a slice of Andalusia from the bike.

Wind, season and kit
Wind: Watch out for the terral — a föhn-type northerly wind from the sierra, extremely hot and dry. It hits Málaga and the Guadalhorce valley, but often doesn't reach Rincón (10 km east). Terral in the forecast = ride east, or go high and early.
When to set off: Early morning — it's a long day (163 km).
Season: Best in March–May and September–November. In September the share of muggy days drops from 43% (1 Sept) to 16% (30 Sept) — the end of the month is noticeably more pleasant. Summer is too hot for the inland climbs.
Gearing: At least 34×30; more about distance than gradient.
Tyres: 28 mm.
Watch out for
- ⚠The N-340 beyond Maro has a tunnel — bring a rear light.
- ⚠A long day — keep an eye on water and time to get back.
