Puerto del León via Olías

An alternative to the classic Puerto del León — instead of the main road out of the centre, you ride through El Palo and pick up the mountain lanes through the village of Olías. The reward is the 'Muro de Olías', a short but brutal wall of around 14%, after which the full climb to the pass (929 m) feels almost restful. At the top there's the Fuente de la Reina and a venta for coffee. Continuous switchbacks in the shade of the pines, views back to the sea and hardly any cars — exactly the kind of riding people come to Málaga for. You come back down on an easy descent along the A-7000.

Wind, season and kit

Wind: Watch out for the terral — a föhn-type northerly wind from the sierra, extremely hot and dry. It hits Málaga and the Guadalhorce valley, but often doesn't reach Rincón (10 km east). Terral in the forecast = ride east, or go high and early.

When to set off: Start before 8:00 — at midday it's a few degrees more pleasant up top than in the humid coastal air.

Season: Best in March–May and September–November. In September the share of muggy days drops from 43% (1 Sept) to 16% (30 Sept) — the end of the month is noticeably more pleasant. Summer is too hot for the inland climbs.

Gearing: At least 34×30 for the wall at Olías (13.8%).

Tyres: 28 mm.

Watch out for

  • ⚠The 'Muro de Olías' really is steep — keep a low gear in reserve.
  • ⚠Fuente de la Reina is often dry in summer — carry your own water.

Your bike is waiting in Málaga

You ride this route on your own bike, straight from the door — we bring your bike over and store it, you fly in with just a backpack. We'll tell you where to ride for your form, and if something goes wrong, you call and we come and pick you up.
