Axarquía — balcony villages and Comares

East of Málaga lies the Axarquía — a region of white villages clinging to the ridges. The riding here is all about short, steep climbs between villages such as Comares (the highest village on the loop, 703 m) and Almáchar. Ramps well over 15%, narrow empty roads, and in between vineyards, orange groves and balcony views down the valley to the sea. It isn't one long climb but a dozen short punches — by the end of the day you have more than 1,800 m in your legs without having ridden a single 'big' climb. Coffee on the square in Comares, looking down the valley, is a reward you'll remember.

Wind, season and kit

Wind: Watch out for the terral — a föhn-type northerly wind from the sierra, extremely hot and dry. It hits Málaga and the Guadalhorce valley, but often doesn't reach Rincón (10 km east). Terral in the forecast = ride east, or go high and early.

When to set off: Morning — the village ramps are crueller in the midday heat than they look.

Season: Best in March–May and September–November. In September the share of muggy days drops from 43% (1 Sept) to 16% (30 Sept) — the end of the month is noticeably more pleasant. Summer is too hot for the inland climbs.

Gearing: At least 34×30; for Comares (15.5%) better 34×32.

Tyres: 28 mm.

Watch out for

  • ⚠The village ramps are short but genuinely steep (15%+).
  • ⚠The ridges are windy — with a terral it gets extra hot and dry.
